GamedayEats.com is website geared towards showcasing recipes of sports fan foods – you know the snacks, dips, wings and meats we all proudly love to stuff our happy little faces with whether watching the game at home or tailgating out in the parking lot by the stadium. Gameday Eats is now trying their hand at making wings sauces. Curt Johnson of the site was kind enough to send me a jar of their brand new Hellfire Habanero sauce to put through its paces.
Ingredients:
Aged cayenne Red Peppers, Habanero Peppers, Vinegar, Water, Salt, Spices, Garlic, Olive Oil, Honey, Citric Acid
Aroma:
4 out of 5. This sauce contained a light, aromatic fragrance of pleasent amounts of vinegar and chile peppers. It’s not harsh or overly-tart smelly like the Louisiana-style, pepper-colored vinegars. There’s even a mild touch of sweetness noticable.
Appearance and Texture:
3 out of 5. Deep reddish-orangish liquid with a medium-runny viscosity. There’s fragments of pepper seeds floating here and there. There’s nothing about it I would consider amazingly appetizing.
It made me wonder that as a sauce (in particular, as wing sauce) if it was necessary to add any ingredients like melted butter before using. I decided to forgo the additiona of anything else and just use it as is on some chicken.
Taste Straight Up:
3 out of 5. Very nice flavor. I thought there wasn’t one flavor that dominated the mix over the others. Although it boasted a minor vinegar punch and chile pepper burn, there was simply something considerably mellow and easygoing about it.
Taste on Food:
3.5 out of 5. I gave some fried wings a thick coating of Hellfire Habanero sauce. It stuck on the chicken decently with no major quibbles to have about it. The flavor had slighty more depth than a normal vinegar/pepper/salt offering would have, but…it just tasted a little too weak. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoyed the flavor. Hellfire Habanero seemed a bit watered down and subdued. There was something really special deep down but I couldn’t quite get to the full wonderful fury of it.
Heat:
2 out of 5. A comfortable warmth abides here. If you like your sports bar or pizza chain wings good and smokin’ hot, you’ll have not problem consuming ones with Gameday Eats Hellfire Habanero.
Overall:
Bottom line is that there’s good taste in Gameday Eats Hellfire Habanero Sauce despite the fact that lovers of intense flavor or immense heat might find the goods buried somewhat.
